V2G technology is transitioning from pilot to commercial applications in Europe, aiming to enhance grid flexibility through electric vehicle batteries and support the integration of renewable energy.

Current status of V2G development in Europe: Current progress includes:

-The Utrecht project in the Netherlands: Europe's first V2G car sharing project will be launched in November 2024, with Renault providing 500 electric vehicles (such as Renault 5 E-Tech) that support bidirectional charging. Paired with We Drive Solar's bidirectional charging stations and MyWheels' shared operation, it can provide about 10% capacity elasticity for the local power grid, helping to balance excess or shortage of wind and solar energy.  

-Personal commercial solution in Germany: In September 2025, BMW and E.ON will collaborate to launch Germany's first V2G service for individuals, supporting models such as iX3. Car owners can earn up to 720 euros (approximately 6007 yuan) per year without affecting battery life, which is equivalent to driving 14000 kilometers for free.  

-Pilot between the UK and France: The UK tests V2G through an electric school bus project, while France collaborates with State Grid and car manufacturers to promote demonstrations, with a focus on verifying grid services and economic incentives.

Policy and economic incentives: The EU promotes V2G through the Green Deal, requiring member states to include electric vehicles in their energy system planning; The Netherlands and Germany provide direct economic returns, such as the Utrecht project lowering user participation barriers through a sharing model, while the German plan incentivizes individual car owners through price differential compensation.

Technical and market challenges: The main obstacles include:

-Battery life concerns: Frequent charging and discharging may accelerate aging, although manufacturers claim that optimizing algorithms can alleviate it, the long-term effects still need to be verified.  

-Insufficient infrastructure: The coverage of two-way charging stations is low, especially in rural areas, which limits the scale of promotion.  

-Limited user engagement: Data shows that only about 10% of car owners may participate in the long-term, mainly due to convenience, cost, and trust issues.

Future prospects: V2G is seen as a key tool for decarbonizing the European power grid, and if widely adopted, it can save an average of $23 billion annually for European electricity users; China is leading in the development and pilot scale of V2G standards, which may have an impact on Europe's technology roadmap, but with policy support and innovation from car companies, Europe is expected to maintain competitiveness in segmented markets.

The V2G market in China

The market potential brought by V2G technology is not only reflected in the profits of every electric vehicle participating in peak shaving, but also in the revolutionary improvement of the power system through its large-scale application. According to the prediction of the National Information Center, the number of new energy vehicles in China will exceed 100 million by 2030. At that time, the energy storage capacity of new energy vehicles will reach an astonishing 5000GWh, which is equivalent to four times the potential of China's current national pumped storage resources.
